Getting Ready For Conferences

Now that grades are in it is time to get ready for conferences.  Surprisingly for me was that the toughest part was scheduling a full weeks worth of work with only two full days and two half days.  I think my favorite part is that we brought a pumpkin in and the kids are excited to find out what we are going to do with the pumpkin.  We have a little booklet and the kids get to do "pumpkin math".  They will be estimating the length and circumference of the pumpkin in unifex cubes, string, ruler, then they will measure it and see if they were high, low, or just right.  They will also be estimating weight, vertical lines, and number of seeds.  Then they will find out the actual numbers.  The students will vote on a face and then the pumpkin will be carved.  After counting the seeds each student will get 5 seeds to plant in a napkin in which they will keep a science journal of what happens with their seeds for a week.  This is such a great way to incorporate math, science, social studies, and writing.  This will be the funnest part of the week.  Off to prepare for my first week of conferences.....
